Metal Oxygen Separation Technologies, Inc. (MOxST, pronounced "most"), the leading company in clean metal production for clean energy, has been awarded a $260,000 grant to develop a new magnesium recycling process from the Department of Energy Industrial Energy Efficiency Grand Challenge Program. MOxST will develop a new patent-pending technology for recycling low-grade and post-consumer magnesium alloy scrap. This adds to current contracts bringing MOxST over $1M in government contracts this year.

Federal Fuel Efficiency Standards are Critical

In April, 2010, the Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency issued new Fuel Efficiency standards that require vehicle manufacturers to reach a fleet average of 35.5 mpg by model year 2016. A large part of achieving this goal is in vehicle lightweighting by increased use of magnesium metal.

The automotive industry cannot implement magnesium weight-saving technology on a large scale without clean low-cost recycling of mixed magnesium alloy scrap at the end of a vehicle's life. This grant will accelerate MOxST's work on recycling the lowest grades of magnesium alloy scrap metal, including heavily-oxidized material, which cannot be simply re-melted and cast.

MOxST estimates that expanded magnesium use could reduce manufacturing energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 60-65% compared to the alloys which they replace.

MOxST CTO Adam Powell said of the award selection, "In addition to funding our work, this award also validates the MOxST approach of using our advanced proprietary technology to solve some of the industry's most difficult materials problems." In addition, MOxST CEO Steve Derezinski said, "This award adds to our existing contracts and enables us to offer a complete solution to vehicle manufacturers for low-emission vehicles without significant cost increases."

About the Industrial Energy Efficiency Grand Challenge
The Industrial Energy Efficiency Grand Challenge program funds research and development on transformational manufacturing technologies which can reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions by 25% or more. It is administered by the Industrial Technologies Program, a division of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

About Metal Oxygen Separation Technologies, Inc.
MOxST was founded by CEO Steve Derezinski and CTO Adam Powell in 2008 to bring SOM Electrolysis technology to industrial scale. SOM Electrolysis is a patented breakthrough technology for making metals from their oxide ores with low capital, raw material and energy costs and zero chlorine or carbon emissions. The company is privately held and backed by angel investors.
